SEE OUR FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS:

What is the difference between PT (Part-Time) and PL (Partial Load)?

Part-Time faculty work under contracts that are not covered by a collective agreement; Part-Time workloads can be a maximum of 6 teaching contact hours per week. Partial Load faculty work is covered by the collective agreement; partial load workloads fall between 7 and 12 teaching contact hours per week. Partial load wages, benefits, and sick days are covered by the collective agreement. Although part-time contracts are NOT covered by the collective agreement, you can read about part-time workload limits and guidelines in the collective agreement here

What is a sessional contract?

A sessional contract is full-time teaching hours for a single semester or a single academic year. This workload is not protected by the collective agreement. A sessional appointment lasts for not more than 12 months in any 24 month period. Although sessional appointments are NOT covered by the collective agreement, you can read about sessional workload limits and guidelines in the collective agreement here

What can I do to get more teaching hours?

Increasing your teaching hours to 7-12 teaching contact hours per week changes your designation from Part-Time to Partial Load, which means that your workload would be covered by the collective agreement.

Speak with your program coordinator to see if there are opportunities for you to take on a new course or subject matter. Speak to other faculty who have worked in Part-Time, Partial Load, and Full Time capacities; they can offer invaluable guidance. Keep your program coordinator and your Dean or administrative supervisor informed about your education and skillset. There are many reasons why your program area may be employing Part-Time rather than Partial Load or Full Time faculty. Understanding workloads by reviewing the collective agreement here

Can I get union representation?

Part-Time and sessional contracts are not covered by our collective agreement. Therefore, the union cannot advocate for you. However, knowing what a Partial Load or Full Time faculty workload is can help you negotiate a fair Part-Time workload for yourself. Review the collective agreement here

Who do I ask if I have a question?

Contact your program coordinator if you have questions about your workload or working conditions.

Although L657 cannot advocate on your behalf, email nblocal657@gmail.com if you have questions or concerns.
